Physical therapy better than drug therapy for arthritis

Rehab Regs, April 18, 2007

Patients with certain arthritic conditions should visit a physical therapist (PT) before taking the nutritional supplement chondroitin, according to the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). Originally the supplement reportedly reduced the pain caused by arthritis. But a new study conducted at the University of Bern in Switzerland claims the supplement does not work to reduce pain and patients are better off visiting a PT to relieve symptoms.

Therapy can help a patient manage the pain with strength, flexibility, and range-of-motion exercises, according to the APTA press release.
