Association and athletic trainers face off in Maryland
Rehab Regs, April 6, 2007
Athletic trainers seeking to expand their ability to reach more patients in Maryland are facing opposition from the Maryland Occupational Therapy Association (MOTA), according to an American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) press release.
MOTA and AOTA fear that establishing an Athletic Trainers Advisory Committee under the State Board of Physicians and requiring athletic trainers to gain licensure would hinder the occupational therapy profession. The proposed bill, H.B. 1083 and S.B. 584, lacks definitions for athlete and athletic injury and provides the general public with therapeutic interventions by athletic trainers, not occupational therapists.
The associations would like the bill to provider clearer definitions and ensure that the scope of the occupational therapy practice is protected, according to the AOTA press release.
