Light exercise helps bedridden expectant mothers

Rehab Regs, March 30, 2007

Expecting mothers who are restricted to bed rest will find that visiting a physical therapist and beginning a light exercise program may reduce the side effects cause by months of immobility, reported The New York Times. Bed rest causes a person's body and muscles to start breaking down after only 48 hours of immobility.

Therapists claim lifting light weights, like a soup can, can help maintain some strength, flexibility, and range-of-motion. Also, women who frequently bend their needs and pull their ankles toward their body help to reduce the risk of blood clots. Maintaining a light exercise plan, with a doctor's approval will help minimize muscle loss, reported The New York Times.
