Association advocates for elderly

Rehab Regs, March 30, 2007

On March 27, the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) testified before Congress on behalf of America's elderly advocating for increased federal funding to improve client services, according to an AOTA press release. There are four areas Congress needs to improve in order to advance the occupational therapy profession. AOTA made the following points:

  • $5 million is needed for The National Institutes of Health and Medical Rehabilitation Research to create institutional and career development awards to assist the occupational therapy profession. Other underrepresented health professions would also be eligible.
  • $3 million is needed for The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to develop a fall's prevention program and older drivers initiatives.
  • $135 million is needed to restore government cuts to the Area Health Education Centers Program, the Health Careers Opportunity Program, and the Centers of Excellence Programs
  • $3 million is need for the Administration on Aging to increase its efforts needed to test and bring market assistive technology to the elderly
