APTA warns frequent fliers of "coach class syndrome"

Rehab Regs, March 16, 2007

Sitting for a long time in cramped quarters, such as on an airplane, can result in blood clots forming in the legs. "Coach class syndrome" is experienced by those confined for hours in a cramped seat, according to an American Physical Therapy press release. Swelling in the feet may occur, and leg cramping, toe cramping, and lower body aching are typical symptoms. If you are going to be seated for a long period of time, the APTA recommends doing the following:

  • Walk up and down the aisle
  • Stretch your back and torso muscles
  • Use luggage as a foot rest to elevate your feet
  • Wear compression stockings
  • Drink plenty of water before and during the flight
