Music is the universal language
Rehab Regs, March 2, 2007
Stroke victims suffering from speech loss will benefit from a new form of speech therapy, reported San Francisco-based ABC7 KGO-TV. Therapists are using melodic intonation therapy or music to help patients regain their speech.
The ability to speak is on the brain's left side, while the music center is found on the right side.
If a patient's left side of the brain is damaged, therapists can work with the right side by using singing and rhythmic tapping to work speech skills.
Many patients need up to 75 treatments for the therapy to work, reported ABC7 KGO-TV.
