ASHA sponsoring ads to warn about hearing loss risks

Rehab Regs, February 9, 2007

The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) has produced and is disseminating nationwide television and radio public service announcements (PSAs) to warn the public about the importance of safeguarding one's hearing when listening to personal audio technology products, according to an ASHA press release.

The television PSAs will depict humorous unintended consequences from listening to an MP3 player at high volumes. In one spot, a young man receives the wrong tattoo due to miscommunication between him and a tattoo artist because both of them are listening to MP3 players at high volumes.

The radio spots compare the sound levels produced by personal audio technology with that from other sources, such as a soda can, motorcycle, and chain saw.

Recent research on the sound output levels of the iPod and other MP3 players suggest that the devices produce high enough sound levels to pose a risk of hearing loss if used at high enough volumes for extended durations.
