Alabama PTs fight for diagnosis rights
Rehab Regs, February 2, 2007
PTs in Alabama are seeking to change state law that prohibits them from making a medical diagnosis, according to the Decatur Daily News.
But a state medical group is countering their argument by saying a visit to a medical professional is essential for a proper diagnosis.
"PTs are very, very qualified and do a good job at what they're trained to do, but in our estimation, they're not trained to make a medical diagnosis, Mark Jackson, director of legislative affairs for the Medical Association of the State of Alabama told the Daily News.
The Alabama Physical Therapy Association says Alabama has the most restrictive practice act in the country and that the law unfairly increases the medical bills of patients seeking therapy.
