PT warns heavy handbags can be hazards
Rehab Regs, January 26, 2007
Large purses and handbags could be hazardous to women's health, William Case, a Houston PT, told Reuters.
Case said that heavy bags with longer straps produce extra leverage that could aggravate the neck or shoulder and lead to back problems.
He recommended that designers put warnings on the bags and that women carrying the bags should walk with the correct posture-keeping the head and shoulders aligned upright.
The issue is similar to therapists' concerns over children carrying large, heavy backpacks, but Case says unlike with children, no one is warning women of the potential injuries that heavy purses can cause, reported Reuters.
