CMS reports fewer PT Medicare claim errors

Rehab Regs, December 8, 2006

A new CMS report states that the rate of all Medicare claims payment errors dropped from 5.1% reported in May to 4.4% reported in November, according to PT Bulletin Online.

CMS' "Comprehensive Error Rate Testing" report also showed that claim errors on physical therapist services declined, with therapeutic exercise (CPT code 97110) errors down by 2.4%. Manual therapy (97140) no longer appeared as one of the services with high error rates.

"The numbers are encouraging," Dave Mason, the American Physical Therapy Association's vice president of government affairs, said in a statement. "Hopefully this means that recent changes in Medicare manuals have made it easier for physical therapists to comply with payment rules and that Medicare contractors have a clearer understanding of how the rules should be enforced."
