APTA: Exercise key in preventing type 2 diabetes

Rehab Regs, December 1, 2006

People at high risk for type 2 diabetes should follow an appropriate exercise program, according to the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA).

Researchers from the Harvard School of Public health reported that more than 18 million Americans have diabetes, though a large majority of the cases could be prevented through exercise and other healthier behaviors, such as not smoking and eating better.

PTs can help develop safe exercise plans for high-risk patients, the APTA said in a statement. These exercise plans, often for people in the overweight population, should be low-impact weight training that avoids excessive joint stress.
