PT almost as good as surgery for herniated discs

A recent study shows that people who undergo physical therapy to treat herniated discs recover at a similar rate to those undergoing surgery, according to Journal of the American Medical Association.

The study performed by researchers at Dartmouth (NH) Medical School compared surgical and non-operative treatment for herniated discs in 1,200 people over four years. Non-operative patients underwent education and physical therapy.

Patients receiving therapy tended to receive a little more relief after two years, but it wasn't as significant as the researchers expected.

People receiving physical therapy didn't suffer worsening back problems, neurological breakdown, or numbness in the legs or buttocks from not having the disc removed as researched previously believed, according to the study.
