Low-calorie diets may cause stress fractures in female athletes

Female college athletes may be at risk for stress fractures by eating low-calorie diets, according to a study by St. Louis University, reported in the Belleville (IL) News-Democrat.

Researchers found that the low-calorie diets resulted in decreased estrogen production, putting female athletes in a similar risk category as people with bulimia or anorexia.

Eating fewer calories causes females to release fewer hormones that are responsible for bone development, Mark Reinking, chairman of the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties told the News-Democrat.
