Study: PT is effective for treating tennis elbow

Rehab Regs, October 20, 2006

A study by the University of Queensland in Australia of 198 participants showed that patients with the clinical diagnosis of tennis elbow responded much better to eight sessions of physical therapy than to corticosteroid injections or the 'wait and see' approach.

The study, first published in the British Medical Journal, looked at results after six weeks and 52 weeks. Corticosteroid injections showed better results after six weeks, but in 47 of the 65 participants receiving injections, the patients regressed.

Physical therapy, which combined elbow manipulation and exercise, was much more successful than the 'wait and see' approach after six weeks, and after 52 weeks, patients who under physical therapy treatment sought the least additional treatment.
