AOTA reaches out to keep politicians safe
Rehab Regs, October 13, 2006
The American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) is used to lobbying Congress on behalf of OTs' needs, but in a new campaign, AOTA is trying to help politicians stay healthy during the campaign season.
The Grip & Grin campaign offers politicians on the campaign trail advice to avoid overusing their hands with all the handshaking they do.
At www.aota.org/nonmembers/area1/docs/gandg.pdf, AOTA offers politicians advice such as
- initiate the handshake for a firm lock on the other person's hand
- shake from the arm, not the wrist
- break the handshake quickly and move on to the next one
- place the left hand over the back of the other person's hand to distribute pressure more evenly
The pamphlet also offers tips on strengthening the hands and treating fatigue. AOTA also included a section on what the association is and why OT is such an important profession.
