Study: 70% of ACL injuries in youths lead to arthritis
Rehab Regs, September 8, 2006
Nearly 70% of young athletes who suffer injuries to their anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) wind up with early onset osteoarthritis in the knee that the injury occurred in, according to a recent study by the University of Michigan Health Systems.
The study is looking at the rise of ACL injuries in adolescents, especially females, and for ways to prevent the injury from becoming degenerative. Researchers believe altering the rehab program, limiting certain activities after injury, or changing the timeframe for which a patient can return to playing sports could help prevent the arthritis.
