AOTA gears up to prevent backpack injuries
Rehab Regs, September 8, 2006
The American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) will sponsor National School Backpack Awareness Day across the country on September 20, using the slogan, "Pack it Light, Wear it Right."
OTs, researchers, and OT students plan to hold nearly 400 events in 47 states to educate students on the proper way to wear a backpack and how much weight to carry. More than 40 million students in the United States carry backpacks, and 60% of students ages 9-20 reported chronic back pain related to backpacks, according to AOTA.
