ABPTS certification on the rise

Rehab Regs, September 1, 2006

The American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS) awarded specialist certification to 802 physical therapists so far this year, according to PT Bulletin Online.

To date, 6,745 PTs have achieved board certification since 1985. The most common certifications recently have been for cardiovascular and pulmonary, clinical electrophysiology, geriatrics, neurology, orthopaedics, pediatrics, and sports physical therapy.

To obtain board certification, candidates must submit evidence of required clinical practice in a specialty area. In addition, candidates must successfully complete a rigorous written examination, demonstrating specialized knowledge and advanced clinical proficiency in a specialty area of physical therapist practice, reported PT Bulletin Online.

ABPTS also recertified 207 PTs in 2005 as board-certified clinical specialists.
