CMS clarifies the eight-minute rule

Rehab Regs, August 11, 2006

CMS issued Transmittal 1019 on August 3 to clear up confusion over the eight-minute rule.

In section 20.2, the transmittal made it clear that rehab providers can bill for services performed for less than eight minutes, as long as the service was combined with other timed services. To bill for one unit, the total time spent providing services must be at least eight minutes.

The transmittal also provided several examples of how to use the eight-minute rule.
