Total knee replacement surgery is rapidly becoming more common, according to an American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons study, reported The Fort Wayne (IN) Journal-Gazette.

In 2005, 450,600 people underwent the replacement surgery in the U.S, but the study says by the year 2030, 3.48 million people will have undergone the procedure

The same report says there will be 572,100 first-time hip replacement surgeries in 2030, up from 208,600 in 2005.

The surgeries, which require extensive physical therapy for months after the operation, are normally covered by Medicare, which typically foots a bill of about $20,000-$25,000 per patient, according to the Journal-Gazette.
