Physician sentenced for defrauding Medicare and Medicaid

Rehab Regs, June 23, 2006

A Texas physician was sentenced to 11 years and three months in prison for his participation in a scheme to defraud Medicare and Medicaid, according to a report by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ).

Anant Mauskar is in part responsible for more than $15 million in losses to the two healthcare benefit programs. Mauskar signed forms stating he personally evaluated and supervised physical therapy services that either never took place or were performed by unqualified people.

Mauskar received payments of $500 a month for his signature, which allowed owners of the PT clinics to bring in more than $1 million, reported the DOJ.
