Report: Congress likely to extend therapy caps exceptions policy
Rehab Regs, June 16, 2006
There is broad consent in Congress to extend the Medicare therapy caps exceptions policy, according to Inside CMS.
The exceptions policy, which went into effect in March, is only good through 2006 unless Congress creates new legislation. But recent overtures from the House and Senate make it likely that legislation will pass, Inside CMS reported.
However, Congress is not likely to extend the exceptions policy past 2007, putting pressure on therapists to come to an agreement on a payment system Congress can agree on.
Since the exceptions policy went into effect, about 80% of beneficiaries who exceed the cap have used the automatic exceptions, with 20% using the manual exceptions.
