New Jersey schools improperly billed Medicaid

Rehab Regs, June 9, 2006

A federal audit says that school districts in New Jersey improperly filed claims for thousands of speech and physical therapy treatments, according to The New York Times.

The claims add up to more than $51 million of unjustified bills to Medicaid. The audit says the claims could not prove medical necessity, or qualified practitioners did not provide treatment, or therapy was never actually delivered.

Inspectors do not believe the school districts intentionally abused the system and say most of the treatments were probably legitimate-but were without the necessary documentation, the Times reported.

The audit reviewed claims filed from July 1998 to July 2001.
