Study: Arthritis sufferers need more exercise

Rehab Regs, May 5, 2006

People suffering from arthritis aren't getting nearly enough exercise, according to a study performed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and published in the May issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

The study found that more than a third of adults with arthritis don't exercise at all and those who do are not doing it enough.

CDC researchers said the trend is a problem because being active helps to alleviate many arthritis symptoms and delay disability.

But just 37% of adults with arthritis met the minimum standard of physical activity the study used, according to the CDC.

Researches discovered that fear of pain, depression, severe joint pain, and the misconception that exercise can harm joints kept many of the patients from exercising, according to the Journal.
