CMS projects 4.6% cut in 2007 fees; cites growth in PT spending

Rehab Regs, April 28, 2006

CMS forecasted that Medicare payments to PTs and other providers under the Part B physician fee schedule will be cut by 4.6% in its preview of 2007 payment adjustments, according to PT Bulletin Online.

CMS said the cuts are largely because of an 8.5% increase in overall Part B spending in 2005. Physical therapy services were cited as one of the fastest growing areas in the "minor procedures" category, along with podiatry and dermatology codes.

Of nine procedures that account for more than 1% of the overall spending growth, four are physical therapy codes, including therapeutic exercise (CPT code 97110), manual therapy (97140), neuromuscular re-education (97112), and therapeutic activities (97530), said PT Bulletin Online.
