Study will look at benefits of vision therapy

Rehab Regs, March 31, 2006

A new demonstration project by CMS will take a look at Medicare's coverage of rehabilitation services for patients with moderate to severe visual impairment, reported Health Insurance Week.

The Low Vision Rehabilitation Demonstration project will take place in New Hampshire, New York City, North Carolina, Atlanta, Kansas, and Washington state, and allow beneficiaries to receive up to nine hours of therapy services prescribed by an ophthalmologist or optometrist.

The five-year study will allow low-vision therapists, occupational therapists, orientation and mobility specialists, and rehab teachers to perform the therapy to see its effectiveness in patients where conventional surgery or other means do not work, according to Health Insurance Week.
