Study: Tinnitus impacts attention, memory

Rehab Regs, March 17, 2006

Chronic, moderate tinnitus can affect memory and attention, according to a study by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).

People with tinnitus, often described as ringing in the ears or a buzzing sound, performed worse on working memory and attention tests than people without the condition.

ASHA published its results in the most recent edition of the Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research.

The study adds to the growing body of research on the relationship between tinnitus and cognition, ASHA said.
