Titanium "bullet" helps fight spinal pain
Rehab Regs, March 10, 2006
Ann Alexander became the first patient in Ohio to undergo surgery to have the X-Stop prosthesis implanted in her spine, reported the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
The X-Stop prosthesis, also know as the titanium bullet, is meant to relieve back pain by filling a space between vertebrae, creating a cushion between nerve sacks and nerves.
The half-inch implant, which weighs only a few ounces, is a new technology that can help people suffering from lumbar spinal stenosis, a degenerative disease in the spine.
Alexander underwent the surgery after trying therapy, exercises, and medications for years with no relief. The Food and Drug Administration approved the use of the X-Stop prosthesis in November, according to the Plain Dealer.
