Dogs used to help in therapy

Rehab Regs, December 2, 2005

A woman in Connesville, PA, is finding that dogs certified as therapy dogs can go a long way in helping patients enduring long-term physical therapy, reports the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Pat Daniels put her dog through a 13-step program by the American Kennel Club and Therapy Dogs International, which certifies the dogs to help patients through therapy.

In the program, the dogs learn how to walk through a crowd when there is a lot of medical equipment and must learn to show no aggression.

"Dogs have a beneficial influence on the social, physical, and mental conditions of the patients," Daniels told the Tribune-Review.

After first seeing a dog help her mother through therapy by keeping her upbeat, Daniels decided to register her dog, Dutchess, and go around to local rehab facilities. The clinics have found that Dutchess can have a big impact on their patients' moods.
