PT firm fined for fraud
Rehab Regs, December 2, 2005
Star Physical Therapy, a physical therapy firm in Tacoma, WA, pleaded guilty to fraud and must pay $655,000 of restitution and damages after a settlement agreement under the federal False Claims Act, reports the Tacoma News Tribune.
The firm illegally billed government healthcare programs $227,535 over a four-year span and fraudulently billed private insurers $200,489.
Nancy Wong, who owned and operated Star, admitted to telling employees to use the wrong billing codes for private sessions. In many cases, the firm submitted claims of one-on-one sessions, when in reality the patients were treated in group sessions.
Star also submitted bills for unsupervised exercises that claimed that staff was working with the patient.
