CMS delays changes to power mobility device codes
Rehab Regs, October 21, 2005
CMS is pushing back the January 1, 2006 implementation date of its new codes for power mobility devices.
The agency is waiting to put the 62 new codes into effect until it can get input from manufacturers, suppliers, and other stakeholders.
Industry manufacturers are thrilled with the delay, as they fought to be heard after CMS announced back in September that there was going to be an increase of codes from 49 to 62.
The increase was due to the rise in popularity of lightweight products, according to HME Newswire, but those in the industry felt that making the changes so quickly could cause financial problems on a widespread basis.
CMS originally announced the 49 new codes in February, giving manufacturers until September 1, 2005 to test their products with the new codes.
