CMU professor preaches manual therapy

Central Michigan University is making manual therapy a more prominent aspect of its general physical therapy program, requiring students to take at least two classes to study the "mechanical approach to muscle and joint dysfunction."

Manual therapy involves the manipulation and mobilization of joints and soft tissues and is used to treat everything from carpal tunnel syndrome to post-fracture and post-casting atrophy.

Students learn examination and treatment techniques for a variety of musculoskeletal problems, an aspect that professor Tim Zipple says is being overlooked by many colleges.
