Colleges seeing increase in physical therapy students

Rehab Regs, October 14, 2005

The University of Indianapolis has seen a notable increase of physical therapy students in the last couple of years, a trend the school's dean believes is also seen around the country.

Interim dean Pamela Ritzline attributes the increased numbers to a shortage of clinicians in the field. "You can graduate, get a good salary, and pretty much name the facility you want to work," she said.

Ritzline says the shortage was due to a drop of interest in the late 1990s after cuts in federal healthcare reimbursement. The university's number of undergraduates studying physical therapy increased by 47% from last year, and Ritzline said she expects that number to continue to rise.
