Blue Cross and Blue Shield NC axes CPM reimbursement
Rehab Regs, October 14, 2005
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina eliminated the in-home use of continuous passive motion (CPM) machines as a patient reimbursement category. The move is one of the first of its kind in the industry and is already receiving criticism from physicians and therapists.
CPM machines are used to speed the recovery from knee surgery. The new policy to not reimburse for the machine, which Blue Cross and Blue Shield says could save them $340 per patient, went into effect October 6. Patients typically use the physician-prescribed machine for 17-21 days at a cost of $20 per day.
The Alliance for Physical Rehabilitation has asked Blue Cross and Blue Shield to revise its policy on the basis that a 2004 study by the Cochrane Library found that CPM machines, in conjunction with physical therapy, significantly increase knee flexibility and decrease the length of a patient's hospital stay.
