CA PTs will try to make state healthier

Rehab Regs, October 7, 2005

In response to a challenge by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, physical therapists throughout California will attempt to make the state the nation's model for health.

The California Physical Therapy Association (CPTA) says it will help the state conquer its obesity problem by educating and motivating residents about a healthy lifestyle. CPTA has initiated a public education campaign, MoveCalifornia, to call attention to the need for daily physical exercise and how physical therapists can play a role in that.

CPTA estimates that the state lost an estimated $28 billion last year in medical costs, lost productivity, and workers' compensation directly associated with obesity. The state also estimates that one in three California children is overweight.

The announcement by CPTA to accept the governor's challenge came as part of its celebration of National Physical Therapy Month.
