Medicare extends coding edits to all outpatient PT services
Rehab Regs, August 18, 2005
Starting January 1, 2006, PT services provided in skilled nursing facilities, comprehensive outpatient rehabilitation facilities (CORFs), rehabilitation agencies, and home health agencies will be subject to the same coding edits that currently apply only to physical therapists in private practice, and services provided in physician offices, reported PT Bulletin Online. According to CMS, Correct Coding Initiative edits are now appropriate to apply to all outpatient PT services. CMS expects these changes will have a positive budgetary effect as they will safeguard against improper coding and overpayment of therapy services, reported PT Bulletin Online.
