House panel discusses pay-for-performance

Rehab Regs, July 28, 2005

Measures to assess reporting, participation, and performance could be linked to Medicare payments for physical therapists and other healthcare providers under legislation debated last week by the House Ways and Means Health Subcommittee, according to PT Bulletin Online. Unlike a similar value-based purchasing bill introduced in the Senate, the House legislation would eliminate the existing sustainable growth rate formula and replace it with a pay-for-performance system to be phased in over the next five years. APTA and other professional organizations have asked lawmakers to reject mandatory requirements that would penalize providers rather than provide incentives to improve patient care, reported the Bulletin.
