Rehab Regs, July 14, 2005

A new national survey released by the U.S. National Council on the Aging revealed that osteoarthritis has a continuous effect on the everyday health of the millions of Americans suffering from the illness. The survey found that of those respondents who gained weight, the average weight gain was 42 pounds, and 82% of those individuals reported a decrease in self-esteem due to the weight gain. Loss of sleep occured in 37% of sufferers, and 87% ranked joint pain and stiffness as their most difficult symptom, according to Obesity, Fitness & Wellness Week. Compared to a year ago, higher percentages of people between the ages of 50 and 65 with osteoarthritis are pursuing treatment options other than prescription medications, including physical therapy, relaxation techniques, and natural remedies, reported Obesity, Fitness & Wellness Week.
