Chronic pelvic pain often misdiagnosed

Rehab Regs, July 7, 2005

Roughly 60% of women suffering from chronic pelvic pain never receive a proper diagnosis, according to Aging & Elder Health Week. Up to 20% of women between the ages of 20 and 50 have chronic pelvic pain of over a year's duration, but bounce around to different health practitioners without ever being treated. The pain can be caused by myriad gynecological conditions, including endometriosis, fibroids, vulvodynia, spasms in the pelvic floor muscles, and pelvic inflammatory disease. Treatment depends on the cause, but can include physical therapy, medication, surgery, and acupuncture, reported Aging & Elder Health Week.
