Two-thirds of Medicare chiropractic payments found to be "improper"

Rehab Regs, June 30, 2005

The Office of the Inspector General (OIG) has found that improper Medicare payments for noncovered or erroneous chiropractic claims totalled $285 million in 2001, according to a report released last week by the Department of Health and Human Services. Over 90% of those incorrect payments were for services performed by chiropractors that the OIG determined were not medically necessary. The OIG also found that over two-thirds of the services allowed by Medicare in 2001 failed to meet coverage criteria, were miscoded, or lacked appropriate documentation.
