Thumbs up for text message stretching

Rehab Regs, June 23, 2005

With over one million text messages expected to be sent this year, some see a potential strain on thumb muscles and tendons. In response, the Canadian Physiotherapy Association and cellular telephone company Virgin Mobile have come up with a six-step "textercise workout," according to the Hamilton (Ontario, Canada) Spectator. Experts say that text messagers who have improper posture and stiff thumbs may experience inflammation of the thumb tendons, as well as sore necks and headaches. They recommend that cell phone users sit up straight and keep their thumbs and forearms parallel to their phone's keypad when text messaging, reported the Spectator.
