National provider number sign up began this week

Rehab Regs, May 26, 2005

Therapists and other healthcare providers began transitioning to single national provider identification (NPI) numbers on Monday, when CMS begain accepting NPI applications. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 requires that most covered entities obtain a single national identification number to be used in all standard billing transactions by May 2007, according to the American Physicial Therapy Association's PT Bulletin Online. CMS will mount a national campaign starting this summer to help providers shift to the new identification number, reported the Bulletin.
