Surgical release may increase gait abnormalities

Rehab Regs, May 12, 2005

Aggressive release leads to a higher likelihood of abnormal ankle motion and internal rotation during gait, according to a recent study at the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in Dallas. In the study, 90 children between the ages of two and three with a total of 127 club feet underwent gait analysis, according to Health Insurance Law Weekly. Ankle motion during gait was normal in 54% of nonoperated feet, compared to 39% of feet that had posteromedial releases. While gait abnormalities were common in all club feet, fewer deviations were documented in feet treated with physical therapy that did not require surgery, reported Health Insurance Law Weekly.
