Ancient martial art benefits elderly

Researchers at the University of Missouri-Columbia are putting a new spin on the old exercise of t'ai chi, to the benefit of local senior citizens, according to Obesity, Fitness & Wellness Week. T'ai chi facilitates both strength and endurance through slow and relaxed movements that places emphasis on balance and a person's center of gravity. The program is taught to seniors to improve their concentration and to help prevent falls, a common problem with older adults. The simplified t'ai chi program used in the study is also appropriate for people with arthritis, lower back pain, knee replacements, and Parkinson's disease, according to Obesity, Fitness & Wellness Week.
