CMS cracks down on inaccurate payments
Rehab Regs, April 7, 2005
To provide clearer guidance on Medicare billing and prevent overpayment or underpayment of claims, CMS announced a new demonstration project last week to deal with these issues, according to PT Bulletin Online. It plans to use outside contractors, referred to as recovery audit contractors, to ensure payment accuracy. Mandated by Congress in the Medicare Modernization Act of 2003, the 3-year demonstration initially will involve Part A Medicare claims filed in California, Florida, and New York at least one year ago. CMS plans to conduct a special "open door forum" in the near future to discuss the implementation of the new process, reported the Bulletin.
