Payment-processing fraud alert
Rehab Regs, March 31, 2005
Therapy practices should be aware of a payment-processing fraud being committed against some healthcare offices, according to PT Bulletin Online. Individuals pretending to be from an office's payment-processing company call office staff and tell them their payment-processing terminal needs to be updated for compliance purposes. The callers claim that they are submitting a contract that authorizes the necessary updates, but the contract is actually an agreement to switch payment processors. Healthcare providers who agree find out about the scam when they receive their next payment-processing service statement. They are then obligated to pay higher rates until they can rectify the situation, according to the Bulletin. Questions about this issue can be directed to NOVA Information Systems, Inc., the administrator of the APTA-endorsed payment acceptance program at 1-888-545-2207. Refer to source code 82022 and have your NOVA merchant ID available, if applicable.
