Balance training prevents injuries

Rehab Regs, March 17, 2005

A new study suggests that training teen athletes on wobble boards can improve balance and strengthen muscles to help prevent lower body injuries, according to St. John's Telegram [Canada]. A typical wobble board is a disk about 50 centimeters in diameter, perched on top of half a ball with the rounded side touching the floor. The person stands on the board and tries to maintain balance as it wobbles back and forth. According to the study, which was conducted at the University of Calgary, teens progressed over a six-week period from two-legged exercises to single-legged exercises, and from open eyes to closed eyes while they performed the exercises.
