Young athletes are getting banged up

Rehab Regs, March 10, 2005

In 2003, approximately 3.5 million American children younger than 15 were treated for sports-related injuries, according to Time for Kids. Some of these injuries aren't serious, but doctors and physical therapists are now treating more youngsters for overuse injuries including cracked kneecaps, sore shoulders, torn tendons, back pain, and damaged growth plates. Overuse injuries are particularly common in single-sport athletes, who practice the same skills repeatedly. Last week, the National Athletic Trainers' Association and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons launched a camplaign to teach young athletes, parents, and coaches how to prevent overuse injuries. Tips include warming up, cooling down, and streching, as well as engaging in activities that develop the whole body.
