Keep hand injuries at arm’s length

Rehab Regs, March 3, 2005

Carpal tunnel syndrome may be the repetitive stress injury best known by the public, but there are other hand injuries out there that can be just as painful, according to the San Jose Mercury News. Stenosing tenosynovitis, also known as trigger thumb, is a type of tendonitis caused by excessive bending of the thumb, often experienced while gripping a computer mouse. Dequervain's tenosynovitis occurs when the tendon that strengthens the thumb is pinched--for example, when a typist hits the space bar on a keyboard. Ulnar nerve impingement is also known as cubital tunnel syndrome and involves the compression of the ulnar nerve in the elbow that can cause numbness in the ring or pinkie fingers. Typing while leaving elbows on armrests or keeping the elbow flexed while holding a cell phone to the ear can aggravate this injury, reported the News.
