Exercise helps those with Parkinson’s disease

Rehab Regs, March 3, 2005

Many who suffer from Parkinson's disease tend to become inactive and lose cardiovascular fitness. Physicians now believe that exercise can help prevent some of the complications associated with the illness, according to the Deseret Morning News. Parkinson's disease occurs in conjunction with normal aging and is a progressive and degenerative neurological disease that occurs when certain cells in the brain that produce neurotransmitter dopamine malfunction or die. Specifically, the disease can wreak havoc with balance, so healthcare providers advocate exercise including aerobic, strength training, flexibility, and balance. Maintaining leg strength and cardiovascular condition can help sufferers counteract the negative effects of Parkinson's disease, reported the News.
